    All Change

A few years ago if I had suggested to Lynnie that we go away in the caravan in mid December I would have got a very short reply. Indeed when I first suggested that we buy a caravan I got a frosty response.

Back in 2012 when the “let’s get a caravan” discussion took place Lynnie suggested that we hire one for a week to see if we liked it. I had memories of wet caravanning family holidays as a nipper and knew that if we were unfortunate with the weather our caravanning life could be scuppered before it had had a chance to get going. So we agreed to buy one and if after two years we didn’t like it and hadn’t made much use of it we would sell it.

    Vale of Ffestiniog

It is our last day in North Wales and having spent the last couple of days by the coast we decide to head inland and take a walk in the Vale of Ffestiniog. Our walking book tells us that our route will cross the tracks of the steam Ffestiniog Railway. So anticipating seeing Jones the Steam at work we head off. Beware there might be a few references to Ivor the Engine in this blog!

    A Rainy Day in Dorset

One of my favourite songs is a Rainy Night in Georgia sung by Brook Benton, today it is a rainy day in Dorset. Thereby proving Lyn wrong, the sun does not always shine in her home county. The rhythmic sound of rain falling on the Unicorn is comforting and makes us feel secure in our tin can. It pours for much of the day. There is discussion about an early afternoon walk with Lyn’s sister-in-law Mary and her family. But a sensible decision is reached and we agree to leave it until later in the day.

    Off we go …..

After months of planning our journey and four weeks of constant packing we have finally reached the day of departure.

Over the years I have always thought the process of packing up the contents of a house and moving to another location a very straightforward activity. Every time we have embarked on the venture, four times in the same village and once when we went “off” to Taunton for a few years, the reality has proved that there is a distinct difference between packing and loading the car for two weeks holiday in the sun and emptying a house.

    Frost and Sun

We have just spent our first night in the Unicorn after moving more of our possessions out of our home. We moved the van onto the site during the afternoon and then returned for a few more hours of packing.

Returning to the Unicorn at 23.30 to find it very cold. Thankfully the heating system soon kicks in to take the chill off and we climb into bed, albeit with thick socks on! A reminder of a childhood with no central heating and tiled floors, waking to frost on the inside of windows. Something that our children find hard to believe, but gives an indication that we were both born in the 1950’s.
