    Northam Burrows

Often when there is a severe weather warning it turns out to be a false alarm. We can all speculate as to why this is, but many will suggest it goes back to Michael Fish telling us not to worry in 1987 when some said storms were on the way. Anyway, the forecast today is for high winds hitting the North Devon coast.

I don’t possess a windsock, the nearest thing I can conjure up to assess wind speed is the angle of the dogs ears as they face the wind. We take a step out of the Coachman and Crosby’s ears are flapping like Jumbo. Dexter takes the older wiser dog approach of looking for any shelter available.

    Seabreeze

Our week at Plymptons Farm CL has come to an end and we are on the move. We have been very lucky with our walks whilst staying here; despite all the rain apart from the odd shower we have stayed dry. Unfortunately there has been a lot of rain and the site is still very wet, so we have not seen it at its best. It is a friendly site, Mary has been extremely helpful and we hope to return during a dry period.

With no awning to take down it is not long until we are sorted and off. It is just over an hours drive to our next site located just outside of Appledore in North Devon.

  • Jamming About Around Winsford

    Jamming About Around Winsford

It is another damp morning with showers through to lunchtime. The forecast is not much better for the afternoon, but we all need to get out for some fresh air. We consult the map and decide to head towards Winsford and have a jam about.

Lynnie seeks reassurance that this will not involve another trek around the Punchbowl; her legs are still recovering from that climb. I offer an incentive, I suggest that after our walk we partake of a pie and pint at the Royal Oak.

    Wimbleball Lake

We are now well into our travelling routine. An early morning walk with the dogs, not too long, about a couple of miles, as Dexter is always keen to get back for his breakfast. Then a few of hours work, followed by an afternoon’s walking.

The location for today’s walk is another trek that I have wanted to do for many years. When I worked in Taunton in the early 1990’s I had a colleague who used to rave about the walk around Wimbleball Lake. So today we will find out if it as good as I was led to believe.

  • Walking from Plymptons Farm

    Walking from Plymptons Farm

After yesterday’s trek Lynnie has requested an easier walk today. So in the morning I catch up with some work and then we pop into South Molton to do some shopping and get access to decent wi-fi to send emails. It is great staying in remote locations, but the downside is that I occasionally need access to the internet for work.

One of the benefits of travelling and working at the same time is the constant change of scenery from my office window. Usually the awning doubles as an office, but this week the ground is too wet and muddy for us to even contemplate trying to erect our new fancy air awning, so I am working from inside the Coachman. The view out of the window across the small lake at Plymptons Farm CL is a great setting to work.

  • Dulverton to Tarr Steps

    Dulverton to Tarr Steps

Last night was cold with a very clear sky so I fully expect a bright start to the day. However, I am wrong, it is overcast with a cold wind. Thankfully there is no sign of rain and the forecast is for a dry day, which is all positive for drying out Plymptons Farm CL.

After a mornings work we head off for our walk, the starting point today is Dulverton. We take a wander around this pleasant Exmoor town before starting our walk from the bridge crossing the River Barle.

  • Withypool to Tarr Steps

    Withypool to Tarr Steps

Many years ago when I worked in Taunton and stayed there during the week I regularly went out walking in the evenings after work. My favourite location was the Quantock Hills and occasionally I would venture onto the Brendon Hills. Very rarely, during the long summer evenings, I would manage to get onto Exmoor. One walk that I never managed has remained on my tick list for a long time, the circular route between Withypool and Tarr Steps.

As I take the dogs for an early morning stroll there are signs that this could be a fine day. There is a bit of spring mist in the valleys, but on the hilltops the sky is clear and the sun has a pleasant warmth to it. It is back to the Coachman for a mornings work before we can get out and really enjoy this lovely spring day.

  • The Punchbowl

    The Punchbowl

Following a wet and windy weekend at home we head off on our first trip of 2016. Part of the fun of caravanning is the planning and Lynnie and I sat down with a map back in November and identified parts of the country that we had yet to visit. So during 2016 we will make our first caravan trip to Scotland and also parts of England we have not previously visited. Of course, along the way we will revisit a few of our favourite sites.

Our first site of the year is located in Devon between Tiverton and South Molton and as we head west we go through an almighty downpour. But by the time we arrive at Plymptons Farm, just outside of the hamlet of Roachill, it has eased to a steady drizzle.
