  • Another Jam Around Salcombe

    Another Jam Around Salcombe

A couple of days ago when we were walking around Salcombe we passed Overbeck’s House, at the time we were midst walk and did not have time to stop and explore this National Trust property. However, today Lynnie has decided that she will visit there whilst I go off walking with the dogs.

We park up close to South Sands and wander along the road towards North Sands and then up to Overbeck’s. Here Lynnie waves us goodbye and the dogs and I continue on the footpath as it climbs, ignoring a path to our left we are soon in fields and at a junction of paths turn left to head towards Bolt Head.

    Frogmore Creek

It is a stunning, spring morning blue skies with the odd patch of white cloud and a slight chill to the air. As I take the dogs for their early morning walk I notice the progression of the hedgerow flowers in the last few days. Nature is such a wonderful thing, a few weeks ago everything was still dormant and within another couple of weeks it will be an abundance of colour.

What could spoil this excellent start to a day? Litter! Why do folk think it is acceptable to throw packaging, cans and bottles into the hedgerow? I have a Victor Meldrew “I cannot believe it” moment when I spot a filled plastic bag and can by the roadside. I cautiously pick them up to dispose of them back at the site.

  • A Jam About on Dartmoor

    A Jam About on Dartmoor

The forecast for today is good, supposedly warm and fine. So where better to head for a good long walk than Dartmoor. Over the years we have walked in most of this Country’s National Parks but have not really explored this one.

The starting point for our wander is Peek Moor Gate, about half a mile north west of Creston. There is only space for a couple of cars to park and we are fortunate to get one. Today is one of the many where we jam about following our instinct and keeping an eye on the map to ensure that we do a circular route.

    Behoofed in South Devon

After yesterday’s soaking we decide an easy day is in order. Coldharbour Farm CL has stunning views and we are surprised no one else is on the site at the moment. It is a cracking spot to spend time relaxing. In between admiring the scenery I work all morning whilst Lynnie makes good use of her new rotary dryer then we head off for a walk.

We always try to take at least one walk from the site we are on. Usually this is achievable without encountering busy main roads and this is definitely the case here.

  • Aveton Gifford to Burgh Island and back

Aveton Gifford to Burgh Island and back

The forecast for the day does not look promising. Frankly it is cold. To add to the chill there is rain forecast. By now I was hoping to have given my legs an airing, but a boy needs all the protection he can get at the moment. Like Mary Poppins I am waiting for the wind to change (I don’t mind admitting that’s the bit in one off my favourite films that always makes me cry!).

After studying the map and discussing our options we agree on a circular walk from Aveton Gifford to Burgh Island. It appears a pleasant stroll alongside the River Avon and then, if the tide is right, a walk across the sands to Burgh Island.

  • A Saunter Around Salcombe

    A Saunter Around Salcombe

One of the outcomes of yesterday’s navigational error ending in Salcombe was a discussion about whether we had previously visited the town. Neither of us could recollect being there so we decide that today we will explore it.

When most people visit a new place they park as near as possible to their target destination. Freddy’s take a slightly different approach. I think there is much to be gained from walking from a distance into a town or village (Lynnie does not always concur with this principle).

  • Clovelly to Mouth Mill

    Clovelly to Mouth Mill

Our original plans were to move to another site today, however, there are strong winds forecast and the outlook for our next destination in south Devon is a bit bleak. A couple of phone calls confirm that it is okay for us to stay on Seabreeze CL for another night and not a problem with the owners of the next site.

The weather during the morning is not at all special, intermittent hailstorms, not the sort of thing you expect in April in Devon. So I settle down to make the most of the rough weather and do some work. Then it is time for us to get out and get some fresh air and there is plenty of it about today.

    Buck’s Mills to Peppercombe

The other evening on our trip to the Beaver Inn Betty, the friend of Lynnie’s Uncle Derrick, was telling me all about how she was from a fishing family and her grandfather came from Buck’s Mills.

The same evening Lynnie’s Cousin David talked about Peppercombe and what a lovely walk it was between the two. Having never heard of either place we decide to follow the recommendation and make it our destination for today’s walk.

  • Spoiling Lynnie

    Spoiling Lynnie

When we planned this trip last November I was expecting to be relatively quiet with work. However, a number of interesting assignments have come along which can be managed from a distance. It does mean that I have to be disciplined and do some work in the morning before walking after lunch.

Whilst I do my work Lynnie undertakes the daily chores around the Coachman. There is still cleaning and hoovering to be done, dogs need brushing and of course there is a need to do some washing.

    Bideford’s Two Bridges

After a night of strong winds things have calmed down a bit by the time I take the dogs out for their morning walk. It is then a few hours work for me before we can go walking.

When a site is so conveniently located for good walking it seems a pity to get into the car, so we decide to walk from Seabreeze CL. We leave the site and head toward Appledore on the coastal path. It is low tide and after yesterday’s storms all is very calm as we walk into Appledore.
