    Stocks Reservoir

My knees are still playing up, particularly the right one, so there is no chance that we will be able to climb any hills today. Lynnie is again keen to explore and do a walk that we have not done previously. So after wishing Lolly and Toby a safe journey home we look at the map and decide to head towards the Forest of Bowland.

The last time I walked in the Forest of Bowland it was a disappointing affair back in 2014. I was all set for a good stomp over some hills only to find that the area I was heading for did not allow dogs. The signs said it was something to do with wild life conservation, but the area was also covered with Grouse Butts so obviously not the conservation of Grouse.

  • Knackered Knees

    Knackered Knees

When I awoke this morning I initially thought that I had got away with yesterday’s grueling walk without too much damage. But as soon as I jumped out of bed (or to be more accurate crawled) I realised that my right knee was giving me serious gyp.

The early morning walk with the dogs on level ground and the movement appeared to ease the discomfort. It is a cracking day and I suggest to Lynnie that we take a saunter up to Victoria Cave again.

  • Settle to Winskill Stones

    Settle to Winskill Stones

One of the beauties of being close to Settle is that Lynnie can wander off whilst I work away in the awning. There are plenty of places for her to visit and one of her favourite spots is Jane’s bookshop. She usually returns with a bag full of books for us to read.

Yesterday I spent the day in Manchester with a client and have to catch up with some work. So it is after lunch before we think about going out. After spending a few hours in the car yesterday I am keen to walk from Brigholme Farm and there are plenty of options.

  • Settle to Victoria Cave

    Settle to Victoria Cave

Anyone who has followed this blog for a while will know that we have an affection for the Yorkshire Dales. It is a place that we have visited frequently over the years and its undoubtedly my favourite place in the Country.

There are other locations where you get stunning views and good walking. There are also places where you can be assured of a friendly greeting from a total stranger whilst walking down the street, and other spots where the beer is good. But in our travelling experience the one place where you can always guarantee all of these is Settle.

  • The Norber Erratics

    The Norber Erratics

A few months ago we did an interesting walk in the Yorkshire Dales from Clapham to Crummock Dale. Later when reading a walking book it transpired that we had been close to a geological phenomenon known as the Norber Erratics. So today, our last day in the Dales in 2015, we decide to explore and see if it is as spectacular as reported.

Our walk starts from the Dales National Park car park in the centre of Clapham. From here we turn right up the lane heading towards the village church, on reaching the church we veer right to pass through two tunnels and proceed uphill on the rough walled track.

  • Flower Pot Horses?

    Flower Pot Horses?

We always find leaving the Dales difficult, in the past we have been known to suddenly extend our stay by a few days. But this time around we need to be heading south so reluctantly pack up.

Whilst we have been staying in Settle there has been a wonderful display of flowerpot characters. We have encountered similar events elsewhere over the years and they are usually limited to variations on the Flowerpot Men theme. The good people of Settle have really gone to town and our favourites are a horse and a dalek.

  • Malham Tarn and Crummack Dale

    Malham Tarn and Crummack Dale

It is very odd, that although Malham Tarn is only a few miles from Settle we have never been there. I may have visited the Tarn as a child but I do not have any recollection and I definitely have not been there in the last thirty-five years. I start to plan a walk there from Settle, but Lynnie points out that the weather looks a bit dodgy so we agree to drive up and walk around.

Parking in the main car park to the south of the Tarn we eat our lunch before heading off, so sit in the comfort of the car and enjoy the view. As we munch a lone walker plods past us, she has a very heavy rucksack and every step looks to be an effort, she is on the Pennine Way path and we speculate on how far she has come today and where she will be stopping tonight.

  • There Is No Better Place To Be!

There Is No Better Place To Be!

Earlier in the year when we were planning this trip Lynnie asked if I fancied eating anywhere special on my birthday. A stupid question really, there was only ever going to be one answer, The Little House Restaurant in Settle. It ticks all the boxes for me, the food is outstanding, the service could not be more attentive and it also means that we can spend an evening with our dear friends Maurice, Jane and Carlos.

  • A Travellers Tales

    A Travellers Tales

Our stay in Settle has come to an end and tomorrow we head back south to return to work, gardening and a bit of golf, all activities that can be enjoyable but do not compare with a trip to the Dales. This trip has been very special and has included many memorable moments, but none more so than Maurice’s 90th birthday party that ended with the legend himself on stage singing “That’s Life”.
