  • An Eleven Mile Jam About from Cholsey Grange CL

An Eleven Mile Jam About from Cholsey Grange CL

After yesterday’s short stroll I have plans for a longer walk.  It is a while since I have managed more than a six mile walk, at home work commitments have restricted my walking to a couple of hours a day.  So this tour I intend getting a few good walks in.

  • Cricket Memories and The White Hart

Cricket Memories and The White Hart

Once again we are packed up and back on the road, I am beginning to believe that like Ben Rumson, Lee Marvin’s character in Paint Your Wagon (another favourite film of mine), I was born under a wandering star.  These days I just can’t wait to get on the road.  It’s not that I don’t enjoy being back at home.  We have had a great time catching up with friends in recent weeks, but travelling and not knowing what’s round the next corner is always exhilarating.

  • Aston Rowant Nature Reserve

    Aston Rowant Nature Reserve

It has been a busy morning on Cholsey Grange CL.  Along with the normal chores of feeding chickens and Perkins the cat it is time to get the mower out and cut the grass.  Lynnie spent last night with Lolly so I was alone in the Coachman and need to make sure it is spick and span for her return.

  • A Walk to Fingest and Turville from Cholsey Grange

A Walk to Fingest and Turville from Cholsey Grange

A few years ago whilst visiting Cholsey Grange we got chatting to the couple pitched next to us.  Since then we have become good friends with Richard and Trudie and for the second year running they have planned their visit to Cholsey Grange to coincide with our stay.  It was great to catch up with them last night and to share news and stories of travels.

  • Our Final Day at Cholsey Grange

Our Final Day at Cholsey Grange

It is our final day at Cholsey Grange, we will be heading home tomorrow. But before we depart there is still time for one more walk in this stunning countryside.

It is another cracking day, there are clouds in the sky, but no fear of any rain. I study the map and identify a “jam about” that for the major part will cover footpaths we have not previously walked. This is my favourite kind of walking.

  • A Circular Route From Mill End to Marlow

A Circular Route From Mill End to Marlow

Today we have planned a pleasant circular walk from Mill End. From the public car park on the outskirts of the village of Mill End we walk besides the road into the village. At the junction with the A4155 we turn left and pass Millend Farm before taking a footpath on the right leading to Hambledon Place.

The footpath turns to the right heading towards the River Thames after a couple of hundred yards we meet the river and turn right following alongside the riverbank. This is pleasant, flat, walking, enjoying occasional glimpses of the river.

  • Aston Rowant Nature Reserve

    Aston Rowant Nature Reserve

After a very pleasant evening with Lolly and Toby I think we need a good walk to burn off the extra calories consumed yesterday. Lolly is a fine cook, just like her mother and both of her grandmothers. Last night’s delights included one of her special chicken pies and a cracking birthday cake.

After my morning stroll with the dogs I sit and examine the map to plot a route. It will be similar ground to that covered a few days ago, taking in part of the Icknield Way, but this time shorter and including Aston Rowant Nature reserve. Before leaving I need to keep the site to Ted’s high standards and cut the grass where a couple of vans have vacated.

  • A Circular Route From Ibstone to Turville Heath and Fingest

A Circular Route From Ibstone to Turville Heath and Fingest

I have had a couple of busy days, lots of activity at Cholsey Grange and completing some work whilst admiring the view from my office, the awning. After a week of being on site I am well into the routine of welcoming new arrivals and I am enjoying riding around on Ted’s mower! It’s a pity the grass is not growing quicker!

One of the new arrivals has been our friends Richard and Trudie, we met them here last year and have since kept in touch. Last night we caught up over a barbeque and a few drinks. It was good to share our thoughts of various sites we have stayed on and chat about football. They are full of anticipation for the new season as their team, Norwich City, returns to the Premier League.

  • Jamming About In The Chilterns

    Jamming About In The Chilterns

Lynnie has gone out for the day with Lolly, they are taking a trip to London and have planned a walking tour. Also on their agenda is lunch at the Ciao Bella, in Lamb Conduit Street. This is probably my favourite London restaurant and one that I used to visit every week when I was staying and working in London ten years ago.

For me it is not the hustle and bustle of London (I’ve had enough of that in the past) but a day jamming about in The Chilterns. When in Norfolk last year we bumped into a chap who greeted us with “Tis a fine day for jamming about”. I’m not certain what the Norfolk definition of a “jam about” is, but I have chosen to define it as walking without a planned route, going where the mood takes you and hoping you end up where you started!

  • A Walk Over Turville Down

    A Walk Over Turville Down

In keeping with the weather of the past few days it is warm and cloudy and no rain forecast. After my early morning walk and a couple of hours working away in the awning it is time for a wander.

There are so many footpaths and circular walks leading from Cholsey Grange that you are almost spoilt for choice. I opt for a route I have done a couple of times before, but is always interesting and usually provides an opportunity to spot some wild life.
