    Fremington Quay

After a day back in Salisbury on Monday for a couple of appointments we awake on Tuesday morning to rain. We know that we are going to get rain on our travels, but the least welcome time to hear the pitter-patter on the Unicorn roof is when we wake on a moving day.

  • Sunshine After the Rain

    Sunshine After the Rain

In 1977 Elkie Brooks promised that there would be Sunshine After the Rain and today she is correct. In the morning there is rain so any walking is delayed until early afternoon. Lynnie does not fancy it and wants to rest her back, so I put on my waterproofs and set off with the dogs.

    Storm at Sea

As Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons sang ‘Oh what a night’. When heading to bed we hear that strong winds are forecast in the west with possible gales in coastal regions. We are on a hill above Bridport (in the West), less that an hours walk to West Bay (coastal region). There was a brisk breeze when we turned in. Nothing to worry about.

    Chesil Beach

After all their walking yesterday neither dog wants to get up. Crosby totally failed in his alarm duties and we all over sleep. As I grab the leads Dexter gives me his best ‘you must be joking’ look. But reluctantly tags along as Crosby and I stretch out whilst walking around a couple of fields. A relaxing morning is called for.

    Dexter’s Birthday

It is Dexter’s birthday, he is six today. The sun is shining and Crosby wants to go out early. Dexter thinks that he deserves a lie in, but the sight of his lead and a whistle makes him change his mind.

    West Bay

Another rainy day in West Dorset. The forecast is miserable, but that does not bother the dogs, we are on a new site and it’s time to explore some fresh walks. We are close to a footpath so I head off with the dogs through Washingpool Farm and along the footpath towards Middle Pymore Farm. There is a sign alongside two benches on the edge of a hilltop field, apparently this is Chesil Model Flying Club’s meeting point. Unsurprisingly, given the weather, nothing is flying today.

  • Moving Again

    Moving Again

The forecast is not good. We awake to rain, we are moving on so the awning has to come down. We are not complacent after last week’s victory and treat the monster with respect. It responds accordingly and behaves. I have a sense that this is a bit like trying to train the dogs, every time you think you have cracked it they show you that they are still in charge. Sit! When I decide to.

  • First Cuckoo of Spring

    First Cuckoo of Spring

A sunny spring day. Today would have been Lyn’s mum’s ninety-third birthday, sadly she passed away shortly before Christmas. We had booked our stay near Poole so we could be with Miki on her birthday, so despite the sunshine the day is tinged with sadness and memories.

  • A Rainy Day in Dorset

    A Rainy Day in Dorset

One of my favourite songs is a Rainy Night in Georgia sung by Brook Benton, today it is a rainy day in Dorset. Thereby proving Lyn wrong, the sun does not always shine in her home county. The rhythmic sound of rain falling on the Unicorn is comforting and makes us feel secure in our tin can. It pours for much of the day. There is discussion about an early afternoon walk with Lyn’s sister-in-law Mary and her family. But a sensible decision is reached and we agree to leave it until later in the day.

    Bovington Camp

I recall that as a nipper in the 60’s I went on an outing with the Judd’s to Bovington Camp for the open day. I remember the excitement at watching the tanks go through their routine. Probably at the same time Lyn was there with her family, it was part of her Uncle Len’s itinerary for his holiday in Dorset. Lyn talks about being in Len’s traveller van, along with her father (Tim), mother (Miki) brother John and her Auntie Dot and cousins Robbie and Elaine.
