  • On The Moor Bagging Trig Points

On The Moor Bagging Trig Points

After yesterday’s exertions in the heat Lynnie has decided she needs a day off and declines joining me on my exploration today.  I think it may have been my muttering about walking across a moor and visiting a couple of trig points that put her off!

  • Marsden Moor and the Huddersfield Narrow Canal

Marsden Moor and the Huddersfield Narrow Canal

Having walked through Marsden a couple of days ago we decide to make it our starting point for today’s walk. It is a fine sunny day and I have plans to bag another Ordnance Survey trig point and Lynnie has hopes of sampling some local ice cream.

  • A Sunny Stroll to Hoylandswaine from Holly Tree Cottage CL

A Sunny Stroll to Hoylandswaine from Holly Tree Cottage CL

After yesterday’s long trek Lynnie has requested a shorter walk today.  On a couple of my morning walks from Holly Tree Cottage CL, in Upper Denby, I have walked down Gunthwaite Lane to Gunthwaite Hall Farm and have told Lynnie about the magnificent barn there.  So that is the route we take for the start of our walk.

  • Wessenden Valley – Eight Reservoirs and a Trig Pillar

Wessenden Valley – Eight Reservoirs and a Trig Pillar

Towards the end of yesterday’s walk we stopped to take in the view down the Wessenden Valley, it looked absolutely stunning.  Today the weather is again set fair so we head back to the car park in the disused quarry above Wessenden Head Reservoir.

  • Up Black Hill and a Trudge Across the Moor

Up Black Hill and a Trudge Across the Moor

For much of our walk from Digley Reservoir yesterday Black Hill dominated the view.  At one point I wondered if it would be possible to make a diversion to pop up to the top and bag the trig point, but I have previous in that regard from a walk in the Dales last year and Lynnie has become wary when we deviate uphill.  Its not that Lynnie minds an ascent, she just likes to know when it is coming.

  • Exploring Last of The Summer Wine Country

Exploring Last of The Summer Wine Country

After our stroll around Upper Denby we are out today exploring a bit more of the local area. Many years ago we briefly visited the nearby town of Holmfirth, which featured as the setting for the popular TV comedy series “Last of the Summer Wine”.  We are not interested in visiting the parts of the town that appeared in the programme, what is of interest to us is the countryside that provided the backdrop to the adventures of Compo, Foggy and Clegg.

  • Spies and Pies on a walk from Upper Denby

Spies and Pies on a walk from Upper Denby

Having spent a few weeks at home we are on the road again!  This time we are heading north to West Yorkshire, we planned this trip in January and I have been looking forward to it ever since.  After four hours of driving it is a relief to arrive at Holly Tree Cottage CL. We receive a very warm welcome from the CL owners Alison and Ashley and after setting up go for a pleasant evening stroll.

  • Jamming About From Settle

    Jamming About From Settle

It is with much disappointment that we are nearing the end of our stay at Brigholme Farm. We were originally due to depart today, but with a looming work deadline we have stayed an additional day so I can spend another morning toiling over a hot keyboard.

  • There’s a Storm Brewing

    There’s a Storm Brewing

Despite planning earlier in the year to retire I have yet to achieve my aim. The main reason is my inability to say no when someone asks me to do some interesting work. The problem is my clients are doing really good things to support others in society, so when they ask for help in developing something it is hard to refuse.

  • Another Walk Up Whernside

    Another Walk Up Whernside

I am walking on my own again today. When I announced that I fancied a walk up Whernside Lynnie quickly decided there were things she needed to look for in the shops in Settle. My starting point is from the roadside parking at Batty Green, which provides a stunning view of the Ribblehead Viaduct.
