  • Beware Bears!

    Beware Bears!

We awake to another misty morning, but again the forecast is for a stunning day. I have a bit of work to do this morning so it is not until after lunch that we prepare ourselves for a walk.

During our first visit to the George and Dragon I picked up, for a small charge, a booklet of walks and cycle routes from the pub. We have decided to follow one of these, a circular route from Hudswell to Downholme and back.

  • A Wander Through Hudswell Woods

    A Wander Through Hudswell Woods

We awake to a cracking day, there is some early morning mist but the forecast is bright. I venture out for an early morning stroll with the dogs as the autumnal sun begins to burn off the mist.

This is one of those days when I will be combining work with our touring. So after breakfast I drive north for a meeting leaving Lynnie dog-sitting with a good book and what looks like the early signs of a cold.

It is late afternoon by the time I return so there is only time for a short stroll, though for many it would constitute a walk! This wander is far enough to give the dogs some exercise and work up an appetite and thirst for a trip to the George and Dragon later.

  • A Stroll From Hudswell to Richmond

A Stroll From Hudswell to Richmond

After an early morning stroll around Poolsbrook Country Park we are soon packed and on the road heading north to Hudswell, just outside of Richmond.

The journey is straightforward though I am pleased that we had the overnight stop. Finding the site, Scar Close CL, is easy and we are greeted warmly on our arrival and advised on the best location to pitch. It makes such a difference to the feel of the site when the owners want to share their local knowledge.

  • Malham Tarn and Crummack Dale

    Malham Tarn and Crummack Dale

It is very odd, that although Malham Tarn is only a few miles from Settle we have never been there. I may have visited the Tarn as a child but I do not have any recollection and I definitely have not been there in the last thirty-five years. I start to plan a walk there from Settle, but Lynnie points out that the weather looks a bit dodgy so we agree to drive up and walk around.

Parking in the main car park to the south of the Tarn we eat our lunch before heading off, so sit in the comfort of the car and enjoy the view. As we munch a lone walker plods past us, she has a very heavy rucksack and every step looks to be an effort, she is on the Pennine Way path and we speculate on how far she has come today and where she will be stopping tonight.

  • There Is No Better Place To Be!

There Is No Better Place To Be!

Earlier in the year when we were planning this trip Lynnie asked if I fancied eating anywhere special on my birthday. A stupid question really, there was only ever going to be one answer, The Little House Restaurant in Settle. It ticks all the boxes for me, the food is outstanding, the service could not be more attentive and it also means that we can spend an evening with our dear friends Maurice, Jane and Carlos.

  • A Travellers Tales

    A Travellers Tales

Our stay in Settle has come to an end and tomorrow we head back south to return to work, gardening and a bit of golf, all activities that can be enjoyable but do not compare with a trip to the Dales. This trip has been very special and has included many memorable moments, but none more so than Maurice’s 90th birthday party that ended with the legend himself on stage singing “That’s Life”.

  • A Special Place with Special People

A Special Place with Special People

There is one walk in the Dales that I have tried to do every year for as many years as I can remember and that is the trip up Ingleborough. There was one year when I was working in the north that I made a detour on the journey between Middlesbrough and Liverpool just to walk up it. (more…)

  • Introducing Toby to the Dales

    Introducing Toby to the Dales

Yesterday after a couple of days working and just wandering with the dogs around Settle and Giggleswick we took to the hills. Lynnie and I headed off on the circular route that I did a few days ago around Attermire Scar on a recky. Lolly and Toby arrive today and I know that I have to plan bear free walking for Lolly.

  • Wandering Over Sugar Loaf

    Wandering Over Sugar Loaf

After two days on Langcliffe Park Caravan Site we are moving to the Brigholme Farm CL site in Giggleswick for a week. Our preference is for small sites and we rarely stay on big commercial ones. Having said that Langcliffe Park suited us perfectly and we will definitely stay again if there is no vacancy on a smaller site in the area. So we make our shortest ever move between sites (less than three miles).

  • Stainforth Revisited

    Stainforth Revisited

When you visit an area as frequently as we visit the Yorkshire Dales it is easy to repeat a walk that was done not so long ago. So today we are repeating a walk last completed in June of last year. Part of me thinks it a bit lazy not exploring a new area, but covering the same ground once or twice a year seems acceptable. In any case we are starting at a different spot and extending the route by a few miles.
