  • A Wonderful Walk through Wharfe

    A Wonderful Walk through Wharfe

Every time we come to the Yorkshire Dales Lynnie requests that we add a new walk to our repertoire. The problem is there are so many walks here that I enjoy that it sometimes difficult to squeeze them all into a visit.

Today I have promised Lynnie that we will do a new walk. She is slightly suspicious when we head off to Clapham; she knows this is the start of my favourite circular walk up Inglegborough. However, as we leave the village by the tunnels alongside the church she knows we must be heading somewhere different.

  • Settle to Winskill Stones

    Settle to Winskill Stones

One of the beauties of being close to Settle is that Lynnie can wander off whilst I work away in the awning. There are plenty of places for her to visit and one of her favourite spots is Jane’s bookshop. She usually returns with a bag full of books for us to read.

Yesterday I spent the day in Manchester with a client and have to catch up with some work. So it is after lunch before we think about going out. After spending a few hours in the car yesterday I am keen to walk from Brigholme Farm and there are plenty of options.

  • Settle to Victoria Cave

    Settle to Victoria Cave

Anyone who has followed this blog for a while will know that we have an affection for the Yorkshire Dales. It is a place that we have visited frequently over the years and its undoubtedly my favourite place in the Country.

There are other locations where you get stunning views and good walking. There are also places where you can be assured of a friendly greeting from a total stranger whilst walking down the street, and other spots where the beer is good. But in our travelling experience the one place where you can always guarantee all of these is Settle.

  • The Norber Erratics

    The Norber Erratics

A few months ago we did an interesting walk in the Yorkshire Dales from Clapham to Crummock Dale. Later when reading a walking book it transpired that we had been close to a geological phenomenon known as the Norber Erratics. So today, our last day in the Dales in 2015, we decide to explore and see if it is as spectacular as reported.

Our walk starts from the Dales National Park car park in the centre of Clapham. From here we turn right up the lane heading towards the village church, on reaching the church we veer right to pass through two tunnels and proceed uphill on the rough walled track.

  • Gargrave to East Marton

    Gargrave to East Marton

About twenty-five years ago whilst we were holidaying with the children in the Dales I took young Freddy on a walk from Gargrave. It was a cracking day with the early part of the walk on the towpath of the Leeds – Liverpool canal and the return stretch on the Pennine Way. I recall sitting on a wall with my nipper and watching a Curlew in a field below us. It was the first time either of us had seen one of these stunning birds so close.

On numerous occasions since then Lynnie and I have driven through Gargrave and I have often told her about the walk. Today Lynnie gets to do the walk for the first time and I get the chance to see if my memories of the walk do it justice.

  • Ingleborough Revisited

    Ingleborough Revisited

After our week in Richmond we have moved a little further south, but remain in the Yorkshire Dales. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Scar Close CL and will definitely be returning in the future. Our current location is a familiar pitch to us at Brigholme Farm CL in Giggleswick.

Past readers will know that we are regular visitors to this site that is within walking distance of our friends in Settle. We have already been here for a couple of days this trip and until now I have done familiar walks in the local area. Today we are heading off for my favourite walk in the Country; it is one that I have done a few times already this year. Regular blog readers will have already guessed that we are heading up Ingleborough.

  • Stoat or Weasel?

    Stoat or Weasel?

Once again it is a foggy start, but it soon begins to lift. I take the boys out for an early morning walk, do some work and then we plan our walk. When travelling we like to explore the area we are in as much as possible and rarely cover the same ground twice. However, as we consider our options we talk about our misty walk yesterday and agree to do the same walk again aiming to admire the views.

So we head for Reeth and park up. It is a Sunday and this is obviously a popular spot for day-trippers. We manage to find a space on the village green and once again head off.

  • From Reeth to Maiden Castle and Grinton

From Reeth to Maiden Castle and Grinton

It is yet another misty autumnal morning with the sun doing it’s best to break through. It is also another day when I have to do some work before we head off. This is becoming a regular feature of our touring this year, but sitting in the awning working beats commuting to London any day of the week!

When we drove through Reeth a couple of days ago we agreed that it was a place we should visit. So we take the short drive up Swaledale and park on the green in the centre of the village.

  • A Walk to Easby Abbey

    A Walk to Easby Abbey

It is another stunning day, like the last few days it starts with early morning mist but the sun soon burns this off and there is a cracking clear blue sky. I have a bit of work to do so the morning is spent around the Unicorn before we head off for our daily walk.

On our trips to the George and Dragon we have been asking the locals about the must see places in the area. A strong recommendation is a trip to Easby Abbey, details of a walk from Hudswell are in the walking guide we picked up on our first visit to the pub.

  • A Walk From Keld to Tan Hill

A Walk From Keld to Tan Hill

Since we started our adventures in the Unicorn we have visited many parts of England and Wales, but the place we visit most frequently is the Yorkshire Dales. When the children were young we visited many times and had some wonderful holidays in the area. There are parts of the Dales that we know really well, and others that we have hardly ventured into.

Swaledale is an area we don’t know well. We visited Muker last year and did a stunning circular walk to Keld but apart from that I cannot recall being here. The drive up the Dale from Hudswell is glorious and we make a note to return to Reeth later in the week, time is short today as we need to drive all the way up to Keld to start our walk.
