  • Returning to Usk Reservoir

    Returning to Usk Reservoir

Both Lynnie and I are struggling a bit with our knees at present.  Mine has still not recovered from the twenty miles around the Black Mountains last Thursday and yesterdays trek across rough ground did not help.  When I took the dogs for their early morning walk it was painful, so we decide that our walk today should be on firm ground.

  • A Walk on the Black Mountain

A Walk on the Black Mountain

When we first came to the Brecon Beacons in 2014 I was initially confused when people talked about walking on the Back Mountain whilst we were staying at Llangadog.  I had thought that it was on the east of the Beacons not the west, and then I realised that the Black Mountains are on the east and the Black Mountain is on the west.  It might only be an ‘s’ but it makes a lot of difference in these parts.

  • A Walk Around Llangadog

    A Walk Around Llangadog

We are often reluctant to leave a site, it is not just the packing up and getting on the road, but the fact that just as we are becoming settled in our temporary home it is time to move on. Leaving Tirmynach Farm CL was exceptionally difficult because we loved the site and it’s convenient location to Hay-on-Wye, plus the walking has been stunning. There is no doubt we will revisit as soon as our travel plans allow.

  • Back on the Black Mountains

    Back on the Black Mountains

It is our last full day at Tirmynach Farm CL and I am keen to get back onto the Black Mountains.  Lynnie has different plans and wishes to wander around the bookshops of Hay-on-Wye.  I suspect her real motive is to make a couple of visits to Shepherds to sample several flavours of their ice cream.

  • A Walk to Mouse Castle

    A Walk to Mouse Castle

Following yesterday’s walk in the Black Mountains Lynnie has a painful knee, so a relatively short walk from the caravan is her request for today. We have differing views of what constitutes a short walk. For me it is around seven miles, where as Lynnie thinks more in the region of three to four.

  • Lord Hereford’s Knob, Grwyne Fawr Reservoir and Capel-y-Ffin

Lord Hereford’s Knob, Grwyne Fawr Reservoir and Capel-y-Ffin

The weather has turned decidedly chilly today; the local forecast suggests there could be wintery showers with hail, sleet and snow all a possibility.  So I have planned a walk into the Black Mountain’s!  Lynnie is relieved to hear we are starting from the small car park on the Gospel Pass at the foot of Hay Buff and Lord Hereford’s Knob.

  • The Begwns and River Wye

    The Begwns and River Wye

After yesterday’s walk to the top of Hay Buff Lynnie has requested something less strenuous.  I check the map and propose a walk along the banks of the River Wye which sounds perfect to Lynnie.  As ever I am cautious to keep the map out of sight so there is no debate about the route we will take.

  • Walking to Hay Buff

    Walking to Hay Buff

Our walk yesterday gave us a taste of the area, but I am itching to get up onto the Black Mountains.   Our distant view of Hay Buff from the Coachman is stunning, so it comes as no surprise to Lynnie when I suggest we should head there today.

  • Chance Encounters

    Chance Encounters

After a week at home we are back on the road, this time heading west into Wales to stay at Hay-on-Wye which I always thought was in England but is just over the border into the Principality.  We arrived at Tirmynach Farm CL yesterday afternoon and immediately realised we had struck lucky, it is a cracking site with stunning views towards the Black Mountains and we are only ten minutes walk into Hay.

  • Vale of Ffestiniog

    Vale of Ffestiniog

It is our last day in North Wales and having spent the last couple of days by the coast we decide to head inland and take a walk in the Vale of Ffestiniog. Our walking book tells us that our route will cross the tracks of the steam Ffestiniog Railway. So anticipating seeing Jones the Steam at work we head off. Beware there might be a few references to Ivor the Engine in this blog!
