We have walked in many parts of the Country but up until today have not ventured onto the Mendip Hills. A couple of times when living in Taunton I thought about driving to the Mendips for a wander around, but with the Quantock Hills close by I always ventured there instead.

Aqueducts and Lock Ups
During our travels we have covered many miles along canal towpaths, I find the industrial architecture around the construction of canals fascinating. Lynnie thinks too many miles on a towpath can be boring. It is a while since we last walked together by a canal and as we are staying only a few miles from the Kennet & Avon canal it is too good an opportunity to miss.

Jamming About from Barrow Farm CL
Usually September is a month when we spend a lot of time in the caravan. However, this year for various reasons, including work being done to our house and my going walkabouts on the South Downs Way, we did not spend a single night in the van. At the end of last week I was suffering from caravan withdrawal and suggested to Lynnie we pop away for a few nights. Not wanting to travel too far, but keen to explore somewhere new we opt for a trip up the A36 from Salisbury to the village of Rode and we are fortunate to get a pitch at Barrow Farm CL.

A Cracking Jamabout on the Quantock Hills
I have reached the final day of my solo tour with Crosby, tomorrow I will be heading home and I know that Dexter, and hopefully Lynnie, will be pleased to see me. For major parts of my working career I was away from home for much of the week and Lynnie and I became accustomed to living apart. I am sure she found life a lot easier without me being around “making things untidy”.

A Circular Walk from Crowcombe Combe Gate to Aisholt
After yesterday’s wet walk I am encouraged by the better weather forecast for today. It’s not that I am deterred from walking in wet weather, though drying things out in the caravan can be a challenge, it is just far more enjoyable to walk in the dry.

A Circuit from Horner to Dunkery Beacon
Last year whilst staying at Cadeside CAMC in Wellington we visited Dunkery Beacon and had a wonderful afternoon, I remember the spectacular views so I have decided to return there today. It is unusual for me to drive far to start a walk, but today it takes over an hour to get from Cadeside CAMC to the village of Horner where I park in the National Trust car park.

Dowsborough Hill Fort and Beacon Hill
After three weeks at home I have itchy feet and we agree that I should head off for a few days walking with Crosby whilst Lynnie spends some time in the garden and Dexter has some respite from serious walking. A favourite location of mine is the Quantock Hills and Exmoor so I head off to the Cadeside Caravan and Motorhome Club site just outside of Wellington.

Walking to Wellington Monument and Culmstock Beacon
A couple of years ago Lynnie and I did a walk on the Blackdown Hills from Hemyock taking in Culmstock Beacon. We had not previously visited the beacon and I was struck by the stunning views. It is my last day on this brief tour with Crosby and rather than hop in the car I decide to start my walk from Cadeside Caravan and Motorhome Club site.

A Circuit from Nutcombe Bottom to Withycombe
Crosby and I have now settled into life together in the caravan. I find it odd how differently my dogs behave when together or apart. Crosby is a lot more relaxed without Dexter, being the younger dog he is always striving to get somewhere first or grab the spot favoured by Dexter, on his own he is calmer.

A Jamabout to Nether Stowey and Holford
It is pleasing to report that Crosby and I survived our first night away on our own. As soon as I have completed our daily chores around the caravan and made a picnic we are ready to head off walking. I have decided to walk on the Quantock Hills today, exploring an area on the east side of the hills that I have not previously visited.
