  • Back On The Quantock Hills

    Back On The Quantock Hills

After my very enjoyable walk around the flat lands of Steart Marshes yesterday I feel in need of a few hills, so I am returning to the Quantocks.  I start my walk from the car park at Dead Woman’s Ditch (Grid Ref ST161381).

  • Steart Marshes and Bridgwater Bay

    Steart Marshes and Bridgwater Bay

Last night as I was studying the OS Map I realised there is a part of the nearby West Somerset coastline I have never walked.  Even though I lived in Taunton for a few years and walked extensively on the Quantock and Blackdown Hills I did not venture the other side of Bridgewater to walk in the lowlands around Bridgwater Bay.

  • A Brisk Six Miles Through The Combes

A Brisk Six Miles Through The Combes

After a few weeks at home I am away again travelling solo with Crosby for company.  We are continuing to renovate our home and Lynnie has stayed behind so that the carpenter, electrician and plumber can move things forward.  Meanwhile I have headed back to Somerset for a few days walking on and around the Quantock Hills.

  • Walking in Doone Country

    Walking in Doone Country

After yesterday’s trip to the Quantocks I am heading back to Exmoor today to become acquainted with parts of the moor I have not visited.  Last night whilst planning today’s walk my eye was caught by Doone Valley. I have never been there but it was a place frequently mentioned by Lynnie’s mother who ranked Lorna Doone as a favourite book.

Walking from Minehead to Luccombe and Selworthy

With so much of Exmoor close by I have decided not to use the car today but walk directly from the Caravan and Motorhome Club’s site in Minehead. On leaving the site I turn left and walk uphill along the pavement besides the A39, Hopcott Road.

  • Winsford Hill and Caratacus Stone

    Winsford Hill and Caratacus Stone

Back in March 2016 Lynnie and I did a short walk from Winsford up and around the Punchbowl. At the time I was not bagging trig points so we did not make a detour to visit the trig on Winsford Hill.  Today I plan to add this trig to my collection.

  • Walking Around Wivey

    Walking Around Wivey

We are nearly at the end of this short trip to Somerset and will be heading back home tomorrow.  I already have plans to pop back to this area in a few weeks to stay at Minehead so we decide walk relatively close to Wellington today.  Our starting point is the small town of Wiveliscombe, or “Wivey” as it is referred to locally.

  • Along the route of the Grand Western Canal

Along the route of the Grand Western Canal

Yesterday evening I spent some time studying the map and devised a walk from the caravan site.  Up until a couple of years ago I would have roughly worked out the distance of a proposed walk by using the method I was taught at school nearly fifty years ago.  This involved a pencil and paper, notching the twists and turns on the route and then measuring the total.  Lynnie was never convinced when I announced the mileage of a proposed route!
