  • Another Route on the Quantock Hills

Another Route on the Quantock Hills

Today’s walk takes us onto the Quantock Hills for a pleasant loop that starts along the broad track from Frog Hill towards Halsway Post. Halfway to the post we turn right taking the track that leads to Higher Hare Knap, again halfway along we take the smaller path on the right leading gradually downhill along the top of Frog Combe.

    Firepool Lock

Our walk today is from our temporary residence in Taunton into the town centre. It does not sound very enticing, but this walk takes us alongside the River Tone and then the Bridgwater & Taunton Canal.

  • Back on the Quantock Hills

    Back on the Quantock Hills

After a trip to London the desire to get out for a good walk in the open countryside is strong. There can hardly be a greater contrast than wandering along the Euston Road and walking on the Quantock Hills. Starting from our usual car parking spot at Dead Woman’s Ditch we head towards Dowsborough Hill Fort.

    Cobwebs In The Mist

A damp and misty autumnal day and Lynnie declines the offer of a walk, so the boys and I head off for the Quantock Hills. Parking at Dead Womans’ Ditch (as per usual) we head off to repeat our walk of a few days ago (Signs of Autumn blog).

  • Signs Of Autumn!

    Signs Of Autumn!

As I have said before, one of the beauties of being in Taunton is walking on the Quantock Hills. Followers of the blog will know that it is one of my favourite places to walk. I have resisted blogging every outing over the last few weeks, but have, so far, kept my vow that at least part of each walk is over ground I have not walked since last living in the area almost ten years ago.

  • Culmstock Beacon

    Culmstock Beacon

A few weeks ago, whilst enjoying a pint in the Greyhound at Staple Fitzpaine, I picked up a small leaflet on walks on the Blackdown Hills. The first of which involved a stroll to Culmstock Beacon. This is a spot we have never visited, the pictures of the Beacon are stunning, so Lynnie and I quickly plan an outing.

  • Around Adcombe Wood

    Around Adcombe Wood

Around Taunton there are no shortage of places to walk and enjoy stunning views. My favourite location is the Quantock Hills and when here previously we rarely ventured onto the Blackdown Hills. Before our recent trip to Yorkshire we did some walking from Corfe and Staple Fitzpaine and vowed to explore the area further on our return.

  • Blowing Out The Cobwebs!

    Blowing Out The Cobwebs!

Back in Taunton and the Unicorn is safe on its storage site. There remains a possibility that we might fit in another trip before the end of the year, but for the time being we have nothing planned. It is an odd feeling driving away from the Unicorn, it has been our home for most of the last six months. I am not sure an inanimate object can look sad, but there is a sense of melancholy emanating from it as we lock the door and drive away.

  • Staple Fitzpaine

    Staple Fitzpaine

Today after a check of the map we decide to do a straightforward walk from the centre of Staple Fitzpaine on the Blackdown Hills. This is just a short drive from us and we are looking to identify a convenient three to four mile walk that will be okay if we encounter a prolonged period of rough weather in the winter.
