Today after a check of the map we decide to do a straightforward walk from the centre of Staple Fitzpaine on the Blackdown Hills. This is just a short drive from us and we are looking to identify a convenient three to four mile walk that will be okay if we encounter a prolonged period of rough weather in the winter.

A Walk in the Woods
Another day of sunny spells interspersed with heavy rain showers is forecast. We have been told that a must visit place is the Kymin. It is only a short drive from where we are staying.
The Kymin is a hill of about 800 feet overlooking the town of Monmouth. It has two interesting buildings at the summit, the Roundhouse and the Naval Temple.

Burial Path
The weather is a bit iffy early on so I use the opportunity to catch up with a bit of work and then we pop into Coleford. This is a town in need of some investment, it has a feel of a place that has seen better times and does not know when, or if they will return.

Devil’s Pulpit
It is a few years since we last came to the Wye Valley and the Forest of Dean. Then we stayed in a friendly bed and breakfast just outside Whitchurch and close by was a motorhome dealer. We spent an hour one afternoon looking at the motorhomes and Lynnie was very clear that she would not entertain the idea of travelling around in one. As mentioned previously she took a similar stance when I first mentioned buying a caravan. Today sees our 141st consecutive day in the Unicorn!

Catching Up
After our months of travel we are going to have a few days back in Pitton. Our final day on the road and it is time to sort a few things out around the van. During the day I amble off with the boys a couple of times for a mooch about. The woodlands close to the site are a great place to wander and are surprisingly quiet. I do not meet a soul.

Three Churches and a Pepperbox
I spent much of yesterday in the car driving to Gatwick airport to drop our son Ben off on the next stage of his world travels. He has recently returned from Central America and is now going to Norway for the summer before heading off to Japan in the autumn. It makes our travel sound a bit mundane.

Bentley Wood
After a few days in Taunton we have returned to Pitton for just over a week to catch up with family and friends. Our visit coincides with Saints’ last home game of the season, so on Sunday I headed to St Mary’s. Predictably, with a number of players destined for World Cup duty, it was a meagerly contested draw.

Reasons To Be Cheerful
Today Lynnie is taking a trip to Montacute House with her friend Margaret and husband Tony, another day excused walking.

Tis Written All Quiet
The wind is blowing and the forecast is not good. Heavy showers are predicted and soon after waking it pours down. This is enough for Lynnie to suggest that I go walking with the boys whilst she catches up with things in the van.

Lonely Boots
I like Taunton. My job moved there in 1992 and I lived in the town until 1995. At that time Lyn and the children were still back in Pitton and I would stay in Taunton during the week and return home at weekends. I spent a lot of time walking in the area and particularly liked the Brendon and Blackdown hills, but my favourite was always the Quantocks.
