  • Visiting Finch Foundry

    Visiting Finch Foundry

It is a miserable start to the day, with mizzle that is forecast to be with us all day.  Though disappointing, it can be viewed positively.  Were it a clear day I would be straining at the leash to get back onto Dartmoor, but in these conditions the moor is the domain of the foolhardy and wild cats.  So we are off to visit Finch Foundry.

  • Walking to Great Links Tor and Brat Tor

Walking to Great Links Tor and Brat Tor

Carrying out our morning chores around the caravan we can see it is clear upon Dartmoor, so it makes sense to take a walk on the moor hoping to see some of the views obscured by fog a few days ago.

  • Brent Tor

    Brent Tor

When we were on the top of Brat Tor yesterday Lynnie pointed out the church on top of Brent Tor and suggested it would be a good place to visit.  Such words always come back to haunt her, because today I have devised a walk there.  To my mind anything within a ten-mile radius can be walked to and I calculate that Brent Tor is around six miles walk away.

  • A Walk to Widgery Cross and across Dartmoor to the Granite Way

A Walk to Widgery Cross and across Dartmoor to the Granite Way

The forecast for the coming week is not great so as today is dry we think it is probably a good day to explore some of Dartmoor.  From our pitch at Lydford Caravan and Camping Park we can see the edge of the moor and low cloud keeps drifting across the Tors, but it is interspersed with the odd spell of sunshine so we are soon lacing up our walking boots and heading off.

  • Exploring Lydford Gorge

    Exploring Lydford Gorge

Last year we started our travels at the end of March, but after our winter excursions I am keen to get away earlier this year.  Lynnie is comfortable with the plan on the condition that we stay on sites with hard standings.  The sight of the Freelander and Coachman both up to their axles in mud on the first site we visited in 2016 is deeply etched in the memory.

  • Leaving Devon

    Leaving Devon

We have reached the end of this tour of Devon, it does not feel like we have been away for four weeks. We usually find when on tour that at the end of the first week we could happily return home, but by the time we are into the third week we feel like continuing non-stop. That is how we feel now, if I did not have work commitments we might look for somewhere to stay to extend this trip, but unfortunately it is not possible.

By the magic of technology I can do most of my work whilst travelling, but occasionally I need to have face-to-face meetings with clients. Whilst away we can do most things without too much bother, but one thing that always causes me consternation is getting a haircut.

  • Sidmouth to Weston Mouth

    Sidmouth to Weston Mouth

This is the final day of our tour of Devon and we both have key priorities. I want a walk that will involve a few stiff climbs to tune up the lungs and legs for our trip to the Yorkshire Dales in a few weeks time. Whilst Lynnie has her antenna tuned into locating some local ice cream. We agree that Sidmouth will provide an opportunity for both.

It is years since we last visited Sidmouth, I recall it being a stinking hot summers day and the place was absolutely packed and it took us a while to find a parking place. Not wishing to be caught out in this manner again we head for a National Trust car park at the top of Salcombe Hill about a mile out of Sidmouth on the Salcombe Regis road.

  • Budleigh Salterton to East Budleigh

    Budleigh Salterton to East Budleigh

Yesterday was very restful for the boys, a few short walks around the lanes and a bit of a run around the fields of Pidgeon’s Farm. They both seem to have recovered from the limps they developed a couple of days ago, but we need to avoid long walks for a few days so Lynnie has planned our route today.

Neither of us can recall previously visiting Budleigh Salterton, if we have it was many years ago, so we decide to start todays walk from there. The added attraction for Lynnie is that she is convinced that she will be able to get an ice cream at a seaside town.

  • Exploring the East Devon Way

    Exploring the East Devon Way

After yesterday’s exploits I study the map to plan a walk that we can do from Pidgeon’s Farm CL without coming close to a busy road. The proposed route will mean sections on minor lanes, but with luck these will be quiet.

We turn right out of the site and at the T-junction we turn right again to head towards Woodbury. Soon after entering the village we take a turning on the right onto a lane that leads to the B3179, we go straight across to a lane on the opposite side leading down towards Rydon Farm. Where the lane turns to the right we continue straight on to Rydon Farm and follow this track as it bends its way to a lane at Exton Farm leading to the A376.

  • Broken Bridge

    Broken Bridge

It is another day when Lynnie is relieved of walking duties, she is meeting with friends from Taunton at Killerton House and spending the day catching up whilst wandering around the house and gardens. I am, therefore, free to jam about with the boys.

I have studied the map and reckon that there is a good walk through lanes and footpaths to a crossing over the River Exe, there I plan to pick up the Exe Valley Way before looping back to Killerton.
