  • South Downs Way – Day 3 – Elsted to Amberley

South Downs Way – Day 3 – Elsted to Amberley

After a good night’s sleep, due to a combination of yesterday’s twenty miles walk and a few good pints of ale last night, I am treated to a wonderful fresh cooked breakfast.  I rarely eat cooked breakfast but with twenty-four miles to walk today I feel the need to load up on calories.

South Downs Way – Day 2 – East Meon to Elsted

In the days when I was still working I used to travel a lot so it was not uncommon to for me to wake up and wonder where I was.  During one ten day period I slept in ten different beds, but these days I either wake up at home or in the caravan.  So when I opened my eyes this morning it took a few seconds to register where I was and then a few more to realise that I had a days walking ahead of me.

  • A Wet Day By The Sea

A Wet Day By The Sea

Today is the last full day of this brief trip and heavy rain showers are forecast for later, so I wait for the awning to dry out and take it down. I manage it just in time; before the first of the storms blows in. There is nothing worse than trying to dry out a wet awning when back home. When we are touring its never a problem, as it is always back up within an hour or two, but trying to dry it at home is always a challenge.

    Atherington to Bognor Regis

Being near the south coast provides a great opportunity for walking more coastline. This is another part of the country where I am comfortable walking on the coastal path, there are no cliffs here! The starting point for our walk today is besides a car park at Atherington. Because it is out of season the car park is closed but there is space to park besides the road.

  • Amberley and Parham Park via Rackham Hill

Amberley and Parham Park via Rackham Hill

Being away in the caravan in November means there is limited daylight for walking so no time to faff about.  We have decided to explore a part of the South Downs Way and head for our starting point; the attractive village of Amberley just off of the B2139.

  • Littlehampton By The Light Of A Supermoon

Littlehampton By The Light Of A Supermoon

In true Baldrick tradition I have a cunning plan entailing us caravanning during the winter months.  Not continually, but getting away in the Coachman for at least 5 nights each month.  I am not sure how this will work out and a few feet of snow might scupper things, but for now the weather is good so we decide to head off.

  • Awning For Sale

    Awning For Sale

We awake early on the first moving day of our tour. The sun is up and it looks like it’s going to be a cracking day. The boys are eager to get out and enjoy the early morning sun. The site we have been on for the last week has a small paddock where they have been able to run around. In a big field there is no problem getting either to run but in a relatively confined space it calls for a couple of tennis balls.

    Duncton View

Another wet day forecast so once again Lyn is relieved of walking duties. Eager to make use of the National Trust membership, a Christmas present from Lolly and her partner Toby, a day at Petworth House is within her sights. Meanwhile the boys and I are off to walk another section of the South Downs Way.

  • Tut Tut it Looks Like Rain

Tut Tut it Looks Like Rain

Sunday morning arrives and in the words of Christopher Robin “Tut tut it looks like rain.” (Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree.) This calls for a meeting of the Unicorn Council and it is soon decided that this is not a day for Lyn to venture a foot outside of the confines of the van or the awning.

So in the car jumps Mr Dexter and Master Crosby adopts his usual position of waiting to be lifted in. Crosby does not like travelling in the car and refuses to jump in when we are setting off. However, if you put his dinner bowl in the boot he is in like a shot. This is one thing we will deal with in the coming weeks.
