Every morning since starting my trek along the South Downs Way (SDW) I have assiduously checked the local weather forecast. Today, eating my breakfast in the Castle Inn surrounded by fellow walkers, I realise we are all in for a good soaking before the day is out.

South Downs Way – Day 4 – Amberley to Bramber
As forecast there was rain and high winds during the night and it looks like I will be in for a blustery day up on the Downs. After an excellent cooked breakfast served in the dining area of the Sportsman, with its fine views over the Arun valley flood plain, I am loaded up with calories and ready to embark on another day’s walking.

After a good night’s sleep, due to a combination of yesterday’s twenty miles walk and a few good pints of ale last night, I am treated to a wonderful fresh cooked breakfast. I rarely eat cooked breakfast but with twenty-four miles to walk today I feel the need to load up on calories.

South Downs Way – Day 2 – East Meon to Elsted
In the days when I was still working I used to travel a lot so it was not uncommon to for me to wake up and wonder where I was. During one ten day period I slept in ten different beds, but these days I either wake up at home or in the caravan. So when I opened my eyes this morning it took a few seconds to register where I was and then a few more to realise that I had a days walking ahead of me.

After weeks of preparations the day has finally arrived when I set off to walk the South Downs National Trail. This is the first time I have tackled a long distance walk over multiple days. I have often walked long distances on consecutive days, but on those occasions I have carried a day sack, now I am heading off with all my gear for the week. (more…)

Bridgewater Monument to Pitstone Windmill and Ivinghoe Beacon
Over the last few days we have walked sections of the Ridgeway National Trail and I am keen to visit the point where the 87 mile trail starts, or finishes, at Ivinghoe Beacon.

A Ten Mile Jamabout from Ewelme to Grim’s Ditch
During our stay at Cholsey Grange last August we did a delightful walk that took us through the attractive village of Ewelme which is just a few miles drive from the caravan site.

An Eleven Mile Circuit from Princes Risborough to Coombe Hill Monument
After our walk along a section of the Ridgeway last week we are keen to explore more of this National Trail. In particular I want to bag the Ordnance Survey trig point at Coombe Hill and visit the nearby monument.
