Another sunny day, Lynnie tells me that the sun always shines in Dorset. As it’s Good Friday there is a lot of holiday traffic about as we head off to Wareham and the Purbecks. Yesterday when we arrived at the Povington Hill car park above Tyneham there were two other cars, today it’s packed.

Wednesday and a trip to Salisbury for an appointment, I get the right day this time! We use the opportunity to pop in and see Bob. Whilst I take the dogs for a walk Lyn visits our friends Andy, Georgi, and their four week old son Rueben. When I call round to collect Lynnie she has a firm hold on Rueben and he has his gums secured to our friend Sian’s finger. A picture of tranquility, his mother claims he keeps her awake all hours, but every time I’ve seen the little chap he is fast asleep.

Tuesday morning arrives and we prepare for a trip back to Salisbury for an appointment. Everything loaded into the car, when Lynnie wisely asks the time of my appointment, a rummage in my pockets and it is confirmed as mid afternoon so plenty of time, no need to rush. Indeed there is no need to rush because the appointment is for Wednesday and not Tuesday!

Up early, as it’s moving day. Out with the dogs for a brisk stroll and then back to the van to prepare for departure. In my teens I suffered from migraines, but thankfully they stopped. Then in my late forties they returned. I wish I knew why and what the trigger was, but when they come they render me useless for an hour or so and thereafter I have a thumping headache. Perhaps it was the thought of doing battle with the awning, but for some reason today is a day that is to be blighted by a migraine.

When we started caravanning we soon worked out that we would have allocated duties. Generally, but not exclusively, if it is something inside the Unicorn it falls into Lyn’s domain. Whereas, the awning and all the water jobs are mostly mine and, lucky me, I have exclusive rights over emptying the chemical toilet.

    Down Memory Lane

Crosby gives us an early morning alarm call, the sun is up and he wants to be out to sniff the spring air. There is no way that Lyn is venturing from the comfort of her bed, so map in hand and boots on off we go at 6.45.

After the trauma of wrestling the awning the previous day, Wednesday is a day for catching up. An appointment takes us back to Salisbury and this provides the opportunity to jettison more excess baggage. We pop back to Pitton, Dexter and Crosby are taken for a familiar walk and to Crosby’s delight the brace of partridges that he was stalking a couple of weeks ago are awaiting his arrival. Dexter quickly learnt that once a partridge, or pheasant, is airborne there is no point in expending further energy. The younger Crosby still thinks that if he chases for fifty yards his efforts will be rewarded.

    Awning For Sale

We awake early on the first moving day of our tour. The sun is up and it looks like it’s going to be a cracking day. The boys are eager to get out and enjoy the early morning sun. The site we have been on for the last week has a small paddock where they have been able to run around. In a big field there is no problem getting either to run but in a relatively confined space it calls for a couple of tennis balls.

Another wet day forecast so once again Lyn is relieved of walking duties. Eager to make use of the National Trust membership, a Christmas present from Lolly and her partner Toby, a day at Petworth House is within her sights. Meanwhile the boys and I are off to walk another section of the South Downs Way.

Tut Tut it Looks Like Rain

Sunday morning arrives and in the words of Christopher Robin “Tut tut it looks like rain.” (Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree.) This calls for a meeting of the Unicorn Council and it is soon decided that this is not a day for Lyn to venture a foot outside of the confines of the van or the awning.

So in the car jumps Mr Dexter and Master Crosby adopts his usual position of waiting to be lifted in. Crosby does not like travelling in the car and refuses to jump in when we are setting off. However, if you put his dinner bowl in the boot he is in like a shot. This is one thing we will deal with in the coming weeks.
